The chisel breaks the edge along the stone's own grain. No two rims match, and none is sanded afterwards.
We cut both by hand.
Marble and travertine objects from a two-person workshop in Afyonkarahisar, Türkiye's marble city.

Arat Marble is two people in Afyonkarahisar. Nesrin draws, Yakup cuts. For nearly eleven years they have made objects from travertine and marble: bowls, boxes, vases, a few figures, one horse.
Every piece is finished twice. The outside is split with a chisel and left as the stone broke. The inside is polished until the vein comes up.
Move across the plinth. On the left, where every piece starts. On the right, where this one ended. Between them there is nothing but a chisel.
Not a catalogue. The five hand gestures the workshop repeats, and the pieces they leave behind.

The chisel breaks the edge along the stone's own grain. No two rims match, and none is sanded afterwards.

Grooves cut ring by ring around the cylinder, then softened so the travertine's pores stay open.

Calacatta Viola, fluted and hollowed by hand. The plum vein decides where the flutes fall.

A horse raised from one marble slab. The mane is the only place the chisel is allowed to run.

Travertine forms with a small gold-toned figure at rest. The stone does the weight, the figure does the quiet.
Twelve more pieces, in red travertine, white marble and Viola, are on Etsy.

Yakup, who cuts
Marble is strong and heavy. It asks for patience, and it asks for effort, every single day.
I shape and finish each piece by hand. Eleven years now, same workshop, same chisel. I split the edge first, while the block still remembers being a rock. Then I polish the face until the vein comes up.

Nesrin, who draws
I make our designs and turn other people's ideas into pieces. As a woman in stone work, building something with my own hands and not giving up is my quiet pride.
We don't see these as decorative objects. Each one carries the character of the stone, the touch of a hand, and eleven years of us. You dream it. Together, we make it real.
Most pieces in the workshop began as someone's sketch. Send one, or point at a piece on Etsy and ask for another stone, another size, another twenty.
A sketch, a photo, a measurement. Or an Etsy listing you'd like changed.
Travertine, lilac marble, Calacatta Viola or red travertine. We suggest the block and send you a photo of it before the first cut.
